Network For Sustainable Mobility calls for technology-neutral CO2 regulation
Background and context
The Network for Sustainable Mobility welcomes the rapid adoption of the targeted amendment to the CO₂ standards for light commercial vehicles. This measure is seen as short-term support for the European automotive industry. Nevertheless, the network strongly warns against seeing this step as a substitute for far-reaching systemic change.
Central demand
The current policy is too one-sidedly focused on electrification. The network is calling for technology-neutral regulation that also includes sustainable, renewable fuels such as biofuels and e-fuels.
Münzer Bioindustrie GmbH also supports this demand. Owner and CEO Ewald-Marco Münzer comments: "Europe cannot afford a one-technology strategy. We need to take a path into the future that is ambitious, inclusive and technologically sovereign - one that unleashes the full potential of all climate-neutral solutions, including sustainable renewable fuels."
Concrete proposals to the EU Commission
- Adherence to the review schedule according to the Automotive Industry Action Plan (Q3/Q4 2025)
- Technology-neutral framework conditions that enable innovation on both the vehicle and fuel side
- Report on market and technology diversity as a basis for revising the CO2 targets.
Three implementation proposals
- Carbon Correction Factor (CCF) for crediting climate-neutral fuels.
- New vehicle category for exclusively CO₂-neutral fuels, with digital monitoring or mass balance approaches.
- Clear definition of CO₂-neutral fuels based on the EU Renewable Energy Directive ((EU) 2023/2413).
Appeal to the European Parliament
The network calls on political groups to adopt a joint resolution that commits to open, technology-diverse and cost-effective decarbonization.
Target vision
A regulatory framework that reconciles decarbonization and competitiveness and enables freedom of choice for citizens and businesses.
