Seven new collection units in Kirchlengern

The municipality of Kirchlengern is expanding its approach to waste management and resource utilisation: seven new collection units for used cooking oil are now available across the local area. In cooperation with Münzer Deutschland, a new solution has been introduced to enable households to dispose of used cooking oils easily and in an environmentally responsible way. The initiative aims to improve the collection of a waste stream that is often underestimated and to ensure it can be meaningfully reused – directly within residents’ everyday lives.

Simple disposal – valuable reuse

Whether from cooking, frying, or barbecuing, used cooking oil is generated regularly in many households. When disposed of via the sink, it can place strain on drains and sewer systems. When discarded in residual waste, a valuable raw material is lost. With the new collection units, Kirchlengern is now offering a practical alternative for everyday use: the collected used cooking oil will be processed by Münzer Deutschland and converted into sustainable biodiesel.

“With these collection units, we are creating a straightforward solution for proper disposal in everyday life,” explains Mayor Rüdiger Meier. “At the same time, we are making a shared contribution to resource conservation and climate protection.”

How the collection system works

Using the collection units is simple and requires no additional effort:

• Allow used cooking oil to cool
• Pour it into an empty plastic bottle
• Seal the bottle securely
• Deposit it in one of the collection units

What can – and cannot – be disposed of

The following items may be placed in the collection units:

• Used frying and cooking oil
• Liquid edible oils
• Oil from preserved or marinated foods

The following items must not be disposed of in the units:

• Engine or mineral oils
• Chemical liquids
• Paints or cleaning agents
• Solid waste or glass containers

A joint project with local impact

The new collection units form part of a joint initiative between the municipality and Münzer Deutschland, aimed at establishing a long-term used cooking oil collection system. The units can be found at the following locations:

“A circular economy works best when it is easy to integrate into everyday life,” says Albert Bechtoldt, Head of Sales at Münzer Deutschland. “Together with the municipality of Kirchlengern, we are creating the foundation to keep more used cooking oil within the cycle.”

With this new infrastructure, Kirchlengern is sending another clear signal in favour of modern, citizen-focused waste management. The municipality is joining a growing number of local authorities that are introducing separate collection systems for used cooking oil. For residents, this means one thing above all: a simple opportunity to make a contribution in everyday life – without additional effort.
