Now in Herscheid: Used Cooking Oil Collection Comes to the Märkischer Kreis

Münzer Deutschland GmbH continues to expand its collection system in North Rhine-Westphalia and is now also active in the municipality of Herscheid. Two publicly accessible collection containers are now available to residents – one located at the municipal depot and another in front of the Hüinghausen village shop. These containers enable simple and proper disposal of used cooking oils and fats, making a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection.

At the official launch event, Mayor Uwe Schmalenbach and Climate Protection Manager Simon Mai welcomed the system as an important step towards greater municipal sustainability.

With around 7,000 residents, Herscheid has an annual collection potential of approximately 9,100 kilograms of used cooking oil (based on 1.3 kg per capita). If collected and disposed of correctly via the Münzer boxes, this volume can be converted into biodiesel, achieving CO₂ savings of up to 93 percent – amounting to roughly 27,000 kilograms of CO₂ savings annually. A win-win situation for climate, community and sewage infrastructure.

Simple and local collection

The system is designed to be as straightforward as possible: residents pour their cooled cooking oil into a clean, sealable plastic bottle (no glass), then drop it into one of the yellow collection containers. Münzer collects the contents and transports them to certified processing facilities, where the oil is converted into high-quality biodiesel.

In addition to CO₂ savings, the system also protects local infrastructure. Improperly disposed fats often cause blockages in sewer systems, unpleasant odors, and high maintenance costs – all of which can be avoided through proper collection.

Strong partnership with the municipality of Herscheid

The collaboration between Münzer and the municipality of Herscheid is a prime example of how climate-friendly solutions can be implemented in everyday life. The container locations were selected together to ensure optimal accessibility for residents – a key factor in encouraging use and public acceptance.
