New in Lemgo: Münzer expands used cooking oil collection system

Münzer Deutschland GmbH continues to expand its collection system for used cooking oil and is now also active in Lemgo (Lippe district). In close cooperation with the city administration, eleven publicly accessible collection boxes have already been installed, with three additional boxes to be placed soon at local supply points.

At the official launch event, Mayor Markus Baier emphasized the importance of the project for the city’s climate strategy. With around 40,000 residents, Lemgo offers an estimated annual collection potential of 52,000 kilograms of used cooking oil – corresponding to a CO₂ savings potential of approximately 156,000 kilograms if processed into biodiesel.

A system that delivers – for climate, sewer systems and circular economy

The Münzer collection system allows residents to safely and conveniently dispose of used kitchen fats. Handling is simple: once cooled, the oil is poured into a clean, sealable plastic bottle (no glass!) and dropped into one of the yellow Münzer boxes. Collection and further processing are handled by Münzer – efficiently, hygienically, and at no cost to users.

The collected oil is processed in certified facilities into climate-friendly biodiesel. Compared to fossil diesel, this fuel generates up to 93 percent less CO₂ emissions. At the same time, sewer blockages caused by improper disposal are avoided – significantly reducing maintenance costs and environmental burden.

Strong partnership with the city of Lemgo

The locations of the boxes were chosen in close coordination with the city to ensure everyday convenience – for example, near supermarkets, glass recycling points, and residential areas. The initiative is part of a growing municipal movement that focuses on low-threshold, effective environmental solutions in daily life.
