Münzer Collection Boxes Now Available Across Haan

  • 17 new used cooking oil collection boxes for the Garden City of Haan
  • A new municipal initiative for greater climate protection in everyday life
  • Turning used cooking oil into sustainable biofuel

From kitchen waste to an energy source – this is now even easier in Haan. Starting today, residents can make use of 17 new Münzer collection boxes for used cooking oil installed throughout the city. The yellow boxes are part of a joint project between the Garden City of Haan and Münzer Deutschland GmbH, a specialist in the sustainable collection and recycling of used cooking oils.

Climate-Friendly, Convenient, and Community-Based

Whether frying oil, deep-frying fat, or leftover salad oil – what often ends up in drains or household waste can now be disposed of sustainably with just a few simple steps. The process is straightforward: pour the cooled used oil into clean, sealed plastic bottles and deposit them into one of the Münzer collection boxes. Münzer handles the rest – from transport to further processing into environmentally friendly biodiesel.

“Every contribution counts – not only for our CO₂ balance but also for our infrastructure,” explains Janine Müller, Climate Protection Manager of the Garden City of Haan. Improperly disposed oil is not only an environmental issue but also places a heavy burden on the city’s sewage system and causes significant cleaning costs.

A Tangible Contribution to the City’s Climate Goals

With around 30,000 residents, Haan has the potential to collect nearly 40 tons of used cooking oil per year, corresponding to a CO₂ reduction of approximately 120 tons. The collected oil is processed in certified facilities into high-quality biodiesel, which produces up to 93% fewer CO₂ emissions than fossil diesel.

“Our goal is to make circular economy visible and practical in everyday life,” says Albert Bechtoldt, Sales Director at Münzer Deutschland. “Municipalities play a central role in this effort – they create the trust and visibility necessary for such systems to truly work.”

Garden City Haan as a Model Municipality

With the city-wide rollout now complete, Haan once again positions itself as a pioneer in citizen-centered sustainability initiatives. Interest was already high during the city’s Sustainability Week at the Haan weekly market. The collection boxes are now set to serve as a lasting symbol of everyday environmental action.
