SPAR and Münzer Bioindustrie enable nationwide used cooking oil collection in Austria
- Nationwide cooperation: Münzer Bioindustrie and SPAR launch sustainable used cooking oil collection at all EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt locations.
- Practical everyday solution: Customers can return their used cooking oil while shopping and receive a €0.15 voucher per deposit.
- From waste to resource: Collected oil is processed by Münzer into climate-friendly biodiesel, actively contributing to climate protection.
Together with SPAR, Münzer Bioindustrie is taking another step towards a truly circular economy: from now on, used cooking oil collection machines are available at all EUROSPAR, INTERSPAR, and Maximarkt locations throughout Austria – a cooperation that makes sustainability especially easy and convenient for customers. For every return, customers receive a €0.15 voucher, redeemable directly at the checkout.
From household waste to valuable resource
Every year, large amounts of used cooking oil accumulate in private households, often disposed of improperly – with negative consequences for the environment and sewage systems. To counter this, Münzer has installed state-of-the-art collection machines nationwide. Customers can simply bring their used cooking oil in a sealed container and drop it off at the collection machines during their next shopping trip.
“We want to provide our customers with practical solutions to integrate sustainability into their daily lives. The used cooking oil collection machines are an example of how easily circular economy can work,” says Hans K. Reisch, CEO of SPAR Austria.
How the system works
Münzer Bioindustrie’s collection system enables customers to dispose of used cooking oil sustainably – conveniently, quickly, and environmentally friendly – right during their shopping. The collected oil is dropped off in a sealed container, leaving customers not only with a good feeling but also with a €0.15 voucher per deposit, redeemable immediately at the checkout. The used cooking oil is then processed by Münzer into sustainable biodiesel.
“Our collection systems for used cooking oil show how something as ordinary as kitchen waste can be turned into a valuable raw material. To make this contribution to environmental protection possible, we need partnerships like this – and ultimately, everyone’s participation. Each of us can help turn something seemingly worthless into energy for the future,” adds Ewald-Marco Münzer, CEO of Münzer Bioindustrie GmbH.
A climate-friendly raw material
Processing used cooking oil into biodiesel makes a significant contribution to reducing transport emissions. From one liter of waste, the company produces one liter of biofuel, saving up to three kilograms of CO₂. In total, around 1.5 million tons of CO₂ are saved annually. If, however, used cooking oil is improperly disposed of via household drains, it pollutes the environment and causes high costs for sewer systems. Münzer Bioindustrie’s collection system makes environmentally friendly disposal simple – and rewards it directly, benefiting both the environment and household budgets.
