Earth Day: Circular economy begins where waste is rethought

22. April 2026
  • Earth Day highlights tangible contributions to environmental and climate protection
  • Münzer processes used cooking oils into sustainable biodiesel, producing more than 200,000 tonnes of waste-based biofuel annually
  • 1 kilogram of used cooking oil can be converted into 1 kilogram of biodiesel, saving around 3 kilograms of CO₂

On the occasion of Earth Day on 22 April, Münzer is placing the spotlight on an aspect that is often overlooked in environmental discussions: climate action begins where existing resources are used intelligently and kept within a functioning cycle.

The company works with material streams that would otherwise be improperly disposed of, wasted, or left unused – particularly used cooking oil. What remains after cooking, frying, or deep-frying is not treated as waste, but as a valuable raw material for new value creation. Münzer produces more than 200,000 tonnes of waste-based biodiesel from this each year.

“Earth Day reminds us every year that environmental responsibility does not have to be abstract – it begins in everyday actions,” says Ewald-Marco Münzer, CEO of Münzer Deutschland GmbH. “This is exactly where we come in: we transform a disposal challenge into a usable resource and demonstrate that the circular economy becomes effective when it works in practice.”

Circular economy as a tangible environmental contribution

When environmental and climate protection are discussed, the focus is often on large-scale targets, international agreements, or long-term transformation pathways. For Münzer, however, this alone does not go far enough. What truly matters is the existence of systems that keep resources in circulation – from collection and logistics through to processing and utilisation.

Used cooking oil is a clear example of the scale of impact this can have in everyday life. From every kilogram of used cooking oil, Münzer produces 1 kilogram of biodiesel, saving around 3 kilograms of CO₂ compared to fossil diesel. At the same time, proper collection helps prevent environmental damage caused by incorrect disposal.

“Many talk about solutions on Earth Day. We put them into practice every day,” Münzer adds. “What matters to us is that resources are not lost, but brought back into use. That is where a tangible contribution lies – reducing emissions, minimising waste, and strengthening supply from existing material cycles.”
